Before you begin your own pool, become familar with Mac QB and how it operates. To do this, run The Mac QB Shareware and open one of the Mac QB Demo files.
Mac QB Pool
This is an actual pool that was played in the 1993 season. The names have been changed to protect the innocent.
The manager did not start the pool until week 6. From week 6 through week 14, the weekly pool settings were set for a Pick-4 parlay pool. To increase interest in the pool by causing it to roll over more frequently, in week 15 the manager changed to a Pick-5 parlay pool.
Because the pool used the regular season NFL schedule, the pool ended week 18. Since there was not going to be a week 19, the pool could not be allowed to roll over. So, the manager changed the pool to a Pick All pool, with a tie-breaker.
I have extended the pool to 20 weeks to encourage you to experiment with it. For week 19, I have entered a bogus schedule and betting lines. I have made it a Pick-5 pool so you won't have to enter a lot of player picks. To see the settings I have used, choose "Change Settings" from the Pool Menu and then select "New Settings Weeks 19-25."
To see how the Entry Form looks, select Entry Form Week 19 from the View Menu. If you want to see how it looks on your printer, choose Print:Entry Form from the File Menu.
• Enter player picks for 5 to 10 players by randomly picking 5 teams. This will illustrate how easy it is to enter the picks.
To see how the Master Sheet is set up, select Master Sheet… from the View Menu and when prompted, select week 19. This is an example of the Pre-game Master Sheet. If you like, you can also print out the Master Sheet by choosing Print:Master Sheet from the File Menu.
Select week 18 to see an example of a Post-game Master Sheet.
• Next, enter bogus scores for 4 or 5 of the games for week 19. When you exit, you'll see the Week's Pool Results window. It will show if any player has won, those that still have a chance to win, and those that have been eliminated.
• Try each of the Menus and its items to see what each item does. You can always Cancel to get out of a routine.
Mac QB Confidence Pool
This file illustrates how a Confidence Pool is tracked and formatted. It has the picks and scores entered for weeks 1-2 and the picks entered for week 3.
• Select Master Sheet...from the View Menu and when prompted select the week 3 button. This will show how the Pre-game Master Sheet is set up for a confidence pool. Next, choose week 2 to see a Post-game Master Sheet.
• Select Week's Pool Results from the View Menu, and then choose week 2. The picks for each player are sorted according to the confidence points he/she assigned to each pick. They run from the lowest to the highest.
• Enter scores for 4-5 games for week 3. You'll now see how the Week's Pool Results tracks the players as the scores come in.
